Writing, Consuelo wrote, is "like life and death; one cannot exist without the other; the writer does not exist without the reader and vice versa. I am learning about my/self in every reading and writing I undertake". *
In the following pages, we have posted some of Consuelo's poems. We have chosen more recent ones, that she wrote in both Spanish and English. We have also included some of our responses to them. As she said, writers and readers cannot exist without the other. Some of her writing drew on her relationships, with her mother, grandmother, siblings and cousins, and lovers. But much of it bore witness to her politics; her passion for human rights, and especially for women's rights, shone through all her writing. There are many themes in her writing: one is silence as active resistance - the theme of the next page. She also drew on her experiences in Chile during the dictatorship, and the sense of never-quite-belonging that goes with migration and exile.
She explained that: "In my books of poetry entitled La Liberación de la Eva Desgarrada (1990) and Arena en la Garganta (2010) I try to face that grit that scrapes my throat and my voice when I tell in metaphors what happens through my body now, during and after the torture to which I was subjected in Chile in 1983".

Escribir, escribió Consuelo, es "como la vida y la muerte; una no puede existir sin la otra; el escritor no existe sin el lector y viceversa. Estoy aprendiendo sobre mí misma en cada lectura y escritura que emprendo".*
En las siguientes páginas, hemos publicado algunos de los poemas de Consuelo. Hemos elegido los más recientes, que ella escribió tanto en español como en inglés. También hemos incluido algunas de nuestras respuestas a ellos. Como ella dijo, los escritores y los lectores no pueden existir sin el otro. Algunos de sus escritos se basaron en sus relaciones con su madre, su abuela, sus hermanos y primos, y sus amantes. Pero gran parte de ellos dieron testimonio de su política; su pasión por los derechos humanos, y especialmente por los derechos de las mujeres, brilló en todos sus escritos. Hay muchos temas en sus escritos: uno es el silencio como resistencia activa, el tema de la página siguiente. También se basó en sus experiencias en Chile durante la dictadura y en la sensación de no pertenecer del todo a un lugar que acompaña a la migración y al exilio.
